I was sitting inside doing some work on the computer today and I saw this bird hopping around the trees outside my window. So I grabbed my camera, went outside, and got a couple of good shots before it spotted me and flew away. I had to do a google search to find out what species of woodpecker it was despite my Natural Resource Studies degree. To my credit, I never took any classes where I had to identify species of birds, but I should have known anyway since I see downy woodpeckers around my house all the time.
It was cold out there. 19°F to be exact. It’s kind of late in the season to have our first legitimate cold day in MA. Then again, in this area of the country it could be that same temperature in mid-April. That’s just the way the weather is around here.
